  Asokaramaya Buddhist Temple

Sri Lanka

On the inside, the Asokaramaya Buddhist Temple in Colombo (fig.), has many colourful murals and bas-reliefs, depicting figures from Buddhism. Amongst the murals is a depiction of the Buddha seated on the ground, whilst a naga is coiled around him and its hood covering his head. It is one interpretation of a pose called pahng nahg prok.

In general, this scene is depicted as the Buddha seated in meditation ón the coiled body of the naga (fig.) rather than encircled by it (fig.).
