  Cambodia-Vietnam Friendship Monument

Cambodia

The Socialist Realism styled Cambodia-Vietnam Friend-ship Monument in the center of Phnom Penh, close to the Royal Palace, and also referred to as the Liberation Memorial.

It commemorates the alliance between the two countries, that overthrew the Khmer Rouge regime. The memorial features the heroic statues of a Vietnamese and a Cambodian soldier, as well as the image of a civilian woman with a baby, which represents peace. However, the monument has on occasion become a political focal point.

Once, when it was climbed and set on fire in post-electoral protests, and again when it was bombed, but caused little damage. Hence, it is now guarded by vigilant security personnel.
