  Chinese water lanterns

At sundown during the Spirit Festival, also known as the Water Lantern Festival, Chinese people set lotus-shaped lanterns adrift on the water, similar to the Thai festival of Loi Krathong (fig.).

 

This is done in a stream, river or canal, as seen here in the picturesque village of Wuzhen (fig.), yet here it was done during the festival of Qing Ming.
