Thailand

A Chinese-style rosewood cabinet with inward turned-legs, reminiscent yet straight and thus slightly different from kha khoo, and adorned with the stylized (fig.) Chinese bat-symbol fu.

The symbol is carved into the doors and fashioned into a grip for the drawers, whilst the copper handles are also of the same design. The pronunciation of the Chinese word for ‘bat’, echoes the sound of the word foo, a homonym that means ‘good luck’.

It is thus considered an auspicious animal and either depictions of bats or its stylized form are a reoccurring feature in Chinese iconography.
