  walking Buddha (Sukhothai)

Statues of a walking Buddha are an important artistic innovation from the Sukhothai period. The pose refers to the episode in the life of the Buddha when, after preaching to his mother in the Tavatimsa heaven, descended back to earth via a ladder, accompanied by the gods Brahma and Indra. His mother stayed there after she passed away, seven days after giving birth to the Buddha.
