phi seua kathoey (ผีเสื้อกะเทย)

Thai name for gynandromorphic butterflies. In case of gynandromorphy, butterflies of any given species that are sexual dimorphic, i.e. when the two sexes of the same species display different characteristics (beyond the differences in their sexual organs), such as colouration and/or markings (dichromatic), will exhibit the combined characteristics of both the male and the female. Usually, this is displayed in that the forewing and/or the hindwing on one side are those of a male individual while one or both wings on the opposite site are those of a female. See also phi seua, kathoey (fig.) and Ardhanari (fig.).
