  Thread-waisted Wasp

Thailand

A Thread-waisted Wasp spotted in Sukhothai. It belongs to the subfamily Ammophilinae, which members are often black-yellow or black-red in colours. They are typically more than 2.5 centimeters long.

Its common name refers to its abdomen, which has a stalk-like front end. Thread-waisted Wasps are parasitic on insects and spiders, and those in the Ammophylini sub-family build ground burrows and provision with caterpillars.

Some Thread-waisted Wasps have been observed lifting their abdomen and perform a kind of dance, as if they are signaling.
