  ton ngiw (trunk)

 

Laos

The cotton tree or ton ngiw, as it is called in Thai, has a straight tall trunk that grows up to a height of around 20 meters and bears large, cone-shaped spikes.

 

One of the punishments for the sinners in the Buddhist hell is that they are forced to climb up the thorny trunk of this tree, naked (fig.).
