  crane on tortoise

Vietnam

In Vietnamese culture, a statue of a crane standing on a tortoise represents enduring power and longevity.

For that reason, these are often found in pairs at shrines of important historical rulers, such as here in Hue, Central Vietnam, at a shrine devoted to the Emperor Khai Dinh.
