The arahat Vanavasin leaning on the Sutra, a symbol for his study of the dhamma and the Tripitaka. According to legend, he was either born or liked to meditate under a banana plant, where he is thought to also have gained Enlightenment.

 

He was thus given the Sanskrit name Vanavasin, which means ‘Living in a Forest’ and is typically depicted seated on a banana leaf.
