The concept of dougong (fig.) is uniquely Chinese, and the people regard the interlocking brackets as an iconographic symbol of their culture.

 

Hence, it nowadays also appears as a freestanding monument, often as a pillar with a historical reference, but it may occasionally also be functional, as seen here, where they double as lampposts.
