  malako (papaya tree)

 

A papaya tree with its fruit (fig.). When still green and unripe the fruit are used as the main ingredient in a popular dish called somtam, also known as 'papaya pokpok'. Once ripe the fruit becomes orange and has a taste similar to melon. In Thai the tree is called ton malako.
