  distilling rice whiskey

Thailand

A framer in northern Thailand is istilling lao khao, i.e. a colourless kind of moonshine rice whiskey.

Though the name moonshine comes from the fact that illegal spirits were made at night under the light of the moon to avoid detection from authorities, in Thailand, as well as in many other countries of Southeast Asia, there is a tolerated policy towards farmers making their own alcoholic beverages, especially when it is distilled for own use.
