PROVINCIAL ESCUTCHEON

Chiang Mai

The escutcheon of Chiang Mai shows a white elephant underneath a reuan kaew. The elephant is the first one ever brought from Rattanoksin to be given to the local ruler of Chiang Mai as a tribute. The white elephant on the escutcheon refers to the prosperity that Buddhism brought to the region, whilst the 'reuan kaew' shelter points to the great Buddhist Council that took place in the city in 1477 AD to review the Tripitaka.
