  juk (tuft of hair)

Thailand

The growing of a tuft of hair (juk) on a child's otherwise shaven head is a centuries old belief that it protects children from becom-ing chronically ill. The juk is cut off at the age of 11 or 13, during a ceremony called Pittih Kohnjuk.
