A Chinese Pond Heron, almost completely changed from its light brown and streaked winter plumage into its breeding plumage, in which its head and breast become deep chestnut, its back grey, and the underparts white.

It occurs in lowland regions and its natural habitat consists of shallow fresh and salt-water wetlands and ponds, where it feeds on insects, fish and crustaceans.
