King
Chulalongkorn
songmah, i.e. an
equestrian
statue of King
Rama V
erected
at the
Royal Plaza
to commemorate
the King's Jubilee of 40 Years on the Throne. It
was cast
in 1908, by order of the king himself, after an equestrian statue he had
seen in Paris, but his with all four hooves on the ground, indicating the
steadfast authority and power of its rider, or meaning its rider was
still alive when it was cast, at least according to one popular
equestrian
iconographic
interpretation. This statue is depicted on the
commemorative banknotes of 10
baht,
issued in 1995, as well as on several postage stamps, with the first
original series
being issued in 1908.
