Common Nawab
Name of a species of butterfly, with the
scientific name Polyura athamas, which is found in
the subtropical and tropical regions of Asia.
Above, the upperside of the wings are mainly black, with one large pale
yellowish spot at the centre, as well as a series of smaller pale yellowish dots
towards the apex. Underneath, the wings are
brownish smudged with chocolate and a
tawny band with a series of white-bordered black spots near the apex of the hindwing. The forewings have
a small pale yellowish spot, as well as a larger pale yellowish patch on both
the forewings and hindwings, that have no border at the base and hence form one
large patch when both wings touch. This fats-flying
butterfly has a wingspan of up to 8.5
centimeters.
