HISTORY & MONARCHY
Suriyothai riding her war elephant
This war memorial at Thung Makhaam Yong commemorates Queen Suriyothai, the royal consort (fig.) of King Chakraphandi, the 16th King of Ayutthaya.
The Queen was killed here on 3 February 1549 in the War of Tabinshweht, fighting off the Burmese invaders whilst riding the King's war elephant, thus sacrificing her life to protect her husband and her country from foreign aggression.
