Cloisonné, in Chinese known as jingtai lan, is a production process in which first separate compartments are created on the metal surface of an object, using metal wire or thin strips of metal.

Then, an ornamental coating of enamel powder made into a paste, usually of several colours, is inlayed in the compartments before the object is fired in a kiln.
