  khon saai khao wat

Villagers of Dahn Saai district in Loei performing the annual rite of khon saai khao wat, in which sand is brought to their local temple Wat Phohn Chai (fig.).

 

This is done in order to compensate for the sand that was unwillingly carried out from the temple grounds over the past year by sticking to visitors feet. The sand heaps are consequently made into temporary sand pagoda called chedi saai (fig.) or ko phra chedi saai (fig.).
