ETHNOLOGY & HILL TRIBES

  Akha woman (Thailand)

Thailand

Akha women belonging to the Loimi group. They can be identified by the headdress (fig.) they are wearing, which is different from other subgroups, e.g. the U Lo (fig.) and Pahmi (fig.).

For the Loimi this exists of a brimless hat decorated in the front with silver buttons and silver balls, and in the back with a silver plate. The balls are made by hammering a silver coin into a pre-shaped concave in a wooden block, creating half a ball; the process is repeated and the halves are then joined.
