Thailand

The Sahn Lak Meuang or City Pillar Shrine of Ayutthaya is located near the Grand Palace ruins within the city's historical park.

The original pillar or lak meuang was erected as part of the city’s establishment ritual when this former Siamese capital was founded in 1351.

The shrine suffered destruction during the Burmese invasion of 1767 and what visitors see today is a reconstructed shrine, housing the restored pillar.
