  Black-eared Kite

The Black-eared Kite is a subspecies of Black Kite (fig.). It is distinct from the nominate race by the tail, which is less forked than that of the first-named race and other subspecies, such as the Pariah Kite (fig.), as well as by more white on the underside of the primaries.

 

It also has a whiter face and throat, which contrast with the darker sides of the face, which led to it being named Black-eared Kite.

Below, it is streaked and rather pale, while the tail is light with brown bars. This particular bird was soaring over Ha Long Bay in northern Vietnam (fig.). See also List of Thai Animal Names.
