Chiang Rai

The escutcheon of Chiang Rai bears the picture of an elephant, historically a symbol of prosperity. It was first introduced by king Phrom Maharaj to symbolize the strength and power of the elephant which was used in warfare and in the construction of houses throughout the realm. This symbol was later adopted by king Mengrai who continued to use it.
