The
prehistoric
Garudapterus
is an extinct genus
of ctenochasmatid pterosaur, belonging to a clade of volant archosaurs that
flourished during the Early Cretaceous period, approximately 130 million
years ago.
Its
generic name is derived from
Garuda,
the mythological bird-like being (fig.)
and the Greek word pteron (πτερόν), meaning ‘wing’. The name ‘Garuda-winged’
hence alludes to its
capability for flight and its discovery in
Thailand.
