An adult male Golden Pheasant, which a species which is also known as the Chinese Pheasant. The male is typically about 90-105 centimeters in length, with the long, buff tail with black markings, accounting for most of it.

It has a copper-red or smetimes yellow-golden crest (fig.), and a golden-orange belly and breast, the latter with some yellow. The upper back is green and the rest of the back and rump are golden-yellow in colour, with blue wings and a black-barred, white ruff-like cape. It has yellow eyes, with a black pupil, surrounded by a dark yellowish orbital skin. Although smaller and with a somewhat different colouring, it is to some extent reminiscent of the male Lady Amherst's Pheasant (fig.).
