In the past, Longhouses in Borneo were used by a number of local riverine and hill-dwelling ethnic tribes (fig.), though nowadays they are also copied, modernized and adjusted by certain nature resorts.

In this modern version at Batang Ai in Sarawak, only the balcony and an inner corridor along one side is for communal use, whilst the rest –along the other side– is divided into a row of private living quarters.
