Portrait of Sir Thomas Stamford Bingley Raffles (º1781 - ⁺1826), the founder of modern Singapore, who began as a clerk for the East India Company and rose to become Governor of Java during a brief period of British rule over the island. The Rafflesia, the world's biggest single flower (fig.), is named after him , as well as the Raffles Hotel (fig.).
