 Subject:

Ghosts in Thai folklore: 1. Mae Naak, a widely known female ghost, who lost her child and died during childbirth, and unwilling to part from her loving husband, she remained on earth as a ghost; 2. Kraseu, a female ghost whose head detaches from her body at night, trailing internal organs such as the intestines, heart, and stomach, while emitting a faint red glow. By day, she is believed to rejoin and conceal her body; 3. Krahang, a male spirit commonly associated with nocturnal flight and rural environments, who is typically described as a man carrying a long wooden rice-pounding pestle (fig.), who transforms at night and propels himself through the air by using large woven winnowing baskets (fig.) as wings; 4. Praet, a class of demons from hell, said to be taller than a house. They occasionally appear at night, weeping at the top of their voices. To illustrate their immense size, they are here depicted in front of the Giant Swing (fig.) in Bangkok, which they far outmeasure.
