Yaad Sri Sirindhorn (คำหยาดศรีสิรินธร), a newly discovered
plant species with the botanical name Impatiens
sirindhorniae, which has been officially registered as a new
species to science by researchers from the
Department of National Parks, Wildlife and
Plant Conservation. It was found in the
Phu Khor–Phu Kratae (ภูค้อ-ภูกระแต)
Wildlife Sanctuary in
Loei
Province. The
species was graciously named by and in honour of Princess
Maha
Chakri
Sirindhorn,
referencing its attractive purplish-pink zygomorphic
flowers, which bloom during the rainy season. According to
the
sih prajam wan
system, in which each day of the week is associated with a
specific colour, purple corresponds to Saturday—the day of
Princess Sirindhorn’s birth. This
significant discovery highlights ongoing efforts to conserve
rare plant species in Thailand’s unique and specialised
habitats. Impatiens sirindhorniae is endemic to Thailand and
was first described in 2001. It is a rare perennial herb in
the family Balsaminaceae, found only in northeastern
Thailand, particularly in limestone-rich areas, typically in
moist, shaded environments like forest understories and
cliff bases. The species is informally referred to by the
common botanical name Sirindhorn’s balsam. |
