RELIGION & MYTHOLOGY

  Yamuna (Yami)

China

Yamuna, who is also known as Yami, is the twin sister of Yama, the god of death, as well as his consort (fig.). Though Yama first refused to marry his twin sister as he considered it incest, Yami is found arguing that since they have slept inside their mother's womb together, it was not wrong to to do so again outside it.

In Vedic beliefs, Yama is depicted as the Lord of Death, while Yami was regarded as the Lady of Life. Here, at Fengdu Ghost City on Mingshan Hill along the Yangtze River in central China, Yami is known as Yan Mi.
