China

Lian pu is a Chinese term that refers to all types of facial makeup used in Chinese Opera. Due to their attractiveness, the patterns and colours of the facial makeup are preserved by duplicating them on genuine masks, that are used for decoration.

Masks that represent male actors called lao sheng (老生), i.e. old ones, or xu sheng (须生), i.e. bearded ones’, who play the roles of venerable elderly men and typically wear long artificial beards, also have these reproduced.
