Dougong are interlocking ornamental brackets used in ancient Chinese architecture, and originally made from wood, though today also other materials may be used (fig.).

 

They form a structural network that joins pillars to the frame of the roof, and are fitted together using a click and lock system, without the need of glue or nails, nor wedges.
