  saffron (dried)

Thailand

Saffron, i.e. the dried pistils and styles of the saffron crocus is a spice, which also exists in powdered form (fig.) and is used for flavouring and colouring food, and as a dye.

Being the world's most expensive spice by weight, nicknamed Red Gold, on Asian markets it is often imitation saffron that is sold, either real saffron mixed with other flower's stamens or dried petals, and a little caution is needed if one is shopping for the real thing.
