These Khmer candle columns, stone pillars topped with lotus-bud finials, symbolize lanterns that were placed along the royal walkway at prasat hin. Arranged in rows on both sides of the path, they illuminated the approach to the sanctuary.

 

Known in Thai as sao nang riang or sao nang jaran, they are said to represent heavenly Apsaras (fig.) standing in line to welcome the king. The pillars are square in shape, often with a subtle waist indentation, reminiscent of slender ladies.
