The kalae (fig.) possibly originated from the remnant piece sticking out of rooftops near the ridge on simple huts where the rafters cross (fig.). To maintain strength the crossed pieces at the ridge are not sawn off, as seen on this Akha hut. See THEMATIC STREET LIGHT.
