TRADITIONS & UTENSILS

  nai (lah)

Thailand

A nai or lah, i.e. a hand powered household device used for winding loosely-coiled bundles of yarn or thread of cotton or silk onto a reel.

A piece of yarn forms a connection linking the wheel with the spindle, thus driving both when the wheel is turned. The skein is tied to the reel which is placed on the spindle, a small axle of steel called leknai (fig.) in Thai.
