The mythological Garuda is the king of birds and arch-enemy of the nagas. In art he is often depicted in battle with a snake or naga, a scene somewhat at odds with another depiction, in which the Garuda is sided by some nagas and that is known in Thai as Phaya Krut yuk Naak (fig.).
