  Rachaphreuk Royal Park

Thailand

Rachaphreuk Royal Park, located at the foot of Wat Phrathat Doi Kham (fig.) in Chiang Mai, is a botanical garden named after Thailand's national flower, whose name Rachaphreuk means ‘Royal Flora’, and bears countless pendant, yellow flowers.

At the entrance to the park, which was named in honour of King Rama IX, who was born on a Monday and thus has yellow as his personal colour according to the Thai sih prajam wan-system, is a hill with a Rachaphreuk or Golden Shower Tree.

Perched at the center of this 240,000 square meter park is Ho Kham Luang (fig.), an authentic Lan Na-style building known in English as the Grand Pavilion, that houses a painting exhibition about the life and works of King Rama IX. The park with its botanical gardens is a project under royal initiative and resulted from the 2006-2007 horticulture expo.
