Sahn Chao Kuan U Rai Hai Lam (ศาลเจ้ากวนอู
ไร่ไหหลำ)
Thai
name for a Thai-Chinese
shrine located at Ban Rai Hai Lam (บ้านไร่ไหหลำ)
in Bang Saen (บางแสน),
Chonburi,
dedicated to
Kuan U (fig.), the
Tiger General of Shu. It is a contemporary religious complex that
exemplifies the continued vitality of Chinese folk religious
practices within the Thai cultural landscape. The shrine is
distinguished by its monumental statue of Kuan U, which rises to
approximately 25.55 metres tall. Historically, Kuan U was a military
general during the late Eastern Han dynasty and later became an
enduring figure in the literary tradition of the Romance of the
Three Kingdoms,
through which his persona was further idealised and disseminated. In
religious contexts, he has been deified and venerated as a paragon
of loyalty, righteousness, and moral rectitude, and is widely
worshipped among Chinese communities as a protector of commerce, a
bestower of prosperity, and a guardian of justice. The presence of
this shrine in Chonburi, a province with a significant history of
Chinese migration and settlement, reflects the processes of cultural
transmission and adaptation that have allowed such belief systems to
flourish beyond their place of origin. As is the case with many
Thai–Chinese
shrines in Thailand, it also functions as a
charitable foundation, and Sahn Chao Kuan U Rai Hai Lam houses the
Office of the Justice Foundation, as well as a first aid centre.
