  coffin donation promotion displays

Thailand

To attract attention and raise funds from donations in order to providing coffins to those who cannot afford them, many temples have rather macabre, yet eye-catching, displays. This one, at Wat Khao Bandai It in Phetchaburi, wears a police hat (fig.).

The promotion displays usually consist of a skeleton wearing sunglasses and making a wai, i.e. the Thai way of greeting, thanking or paying respect, by bringing the hands together in front of the chest or face. This one, at Wat Theplihlah in Bangkok, wears a gold necklace with amulets.
