TRADITIONS & UTENSILS

  ngop nahm chiao

Thailand

Ngop nahm chiao are typical ngop from Trat province. These kind of hats are named after the place where they are made, i.e. the tambon Nahm Chiao, though the local population calls them muak bai jahk (หมวกใบจาก), meaning ‘nipa palm leaves hat’.

These hats come in different shapes, with forms resembling a wok, a turtle, round or oval, and pointed, and they are typically covered with oil or grease on the outside as a protecting layer against the sun and rain.
