  Dhammayazika Buddha images

Myanmar

The Theravada temple Dhamma-yazika Phaya in Bagan (fig.) has a pentagonal layout, thus allowing for an additional Buddha image besides the usual four facing the cardinal points.

There are four main images of buddha's who have already attained Enlightenment, i.e. are Kassapa (fig.), Kakusandha (fig.), Konagamana (fig.), and Gautama (fig.).

These buddha's of the past, three of which whom are precursors of the fourth one, i.e. the historical Buddha, who is also called or Sakyamuni Buddha.

Reminiscent of the lokapala, the four Buddha's are each assigned to a certain point of the compass, i.e. i.e. Kassapa facing South, Kakusandha facing North, Konagamana facing East, and Gautama facing West.
