  chofa

 

The spires on the rooftops of Buddhist temples are called chofa. The look like a raised nagahead but possibly represent a highly stylized garuda or hamsa. Chofa literally means 'bunch of sky', but the origin as well as the exact meaning are disputed. In rare cases a different form is used (fig.).
