  dhammachakka

 

The dhammachakka or 'wheel of law' symbolises Buddha's first public discourse on his doctrine and was given to five ascetics in a deer park. In iconography this is sometimes represented by the presence of his five disciples or panjawakkie (fig.) or, as in this picture, by five pedestals. Usually made from stone or sandstone (fig.).
