PROVINCIAL ESCUTCHEON

Nakhon Ratchasima

The escutcheon of Nakhon Ratchasima shows the statue of queen Suranari (fig.) in front of the Chumphon gate (fig.). This ancient city in the past consisted of two parts, namely 'meuang sema' to the South of the Lam Taklong river, and 'meuang koram phra' to the North of it. The gate is of old the symbol of this historic city and refers possibly to the fact that this town is the entrance to Isaan. It was built in the second half of the 17th century during the rule of king Narai.
